Inter Milan’s 5-0 Victory and Mixed Reactions: Bastoni and Thuram Smile, New Signing Shines While Chivu Remains Calm
In the Serie A opener, Inter hosted Torino at the San Siro. After coach Simone Inzaghi’s departure during the transfer window, and with the team coming off a trophyless season despite competing on multiple fronts, the new campaign carried heavy pressure. For the new manager Chivu in particular, whether he can lead the team well and, without many new signings, spark Inter’s vitality to fix old problems, is a real test.
Fortunately, in the first match their performance was truly impressive, offering new hope and temporarily relieving pressure on Chivu himself.
In the first half, Bastoni and Thuram both found the net, with Inter showing excellent form and proving their quality at home. Especially in their quick transitions between defense and attack, they combined stable defending with efficient offensive play. By halftime, Inter were 2-0 up against Torino.
In the second half, Lautaro scored and assisted, proving his value as captain, while Thuram completed a brace, breaking his scoring drought and celebrating with a big smile. After that, new signing Boni marked his debut with a goal, laying a solid foundation for his Inter career.
In the end, after 90 minutes, Inter beat Torino 5-0 at home, giving new coach Chivu a winning start. This victory set a new record for Inter’s biggest opening-round win in the past 64 years. Back in 1961, the Nerazzurri began the season with a 6-0 win over Atalanta. For Chivu, the record itself might not matter, but the reduced pressure is of real value.
After the match, Bastoni said: “After last season’s difficult ending, we really craved victory. Football gave us a chance to bounce back. We couldn’t wait to start the new season, and we’re very satisfied with the team’s performance.” Indeed, for Inter, the urgency of this “rebound mission” cannot be underestimated. Last season’s heavy defeat to PSG damaged their confidence and ambition, and everyone at Inter wants to regain past glory this season and fight for more.
Lautaro said: “Everyone is highly motivated, even the substitutes who came on. At the start of the season, we’ve regained our energy. We’re taking back what should have been ours, and today we showed strong desire to win. We are Inter.” His views echoed Bastoni’s.
Bastoni also joked: “I’m happy for Thuram—after a ‘six-month holiday,’ he’s finally back. Jokes aside, I’m really glad for him because he absolutely deserves it. This year he has put in huge effort for the team.” He was referring to Thuram breaking out of his slump and returning to scoring form. Clearly, Inter are brimming with confidence and optimism, with a great atmosphere throughout the squad—the exact scene fans wanted to see.
Chivu, on the other hand, remained calm. In his interview, he stressed that this was just 90 minutes of football. Once it’s over, it’s over—there is no need to prove or explain anything to anyone. The team wants much more, and this is only the beginning.
